In Okonkwo’s obi, I was crunching locusts and drinking palm wine happily with Nwoye and his father when Ezeudu came in. Instead of joining in the meal with us, Ezeudu asked Okonkwo to have a word with him outside. I am curious about their conversation. Since they were out of earshot, I cannot hear anything to fulfill my curiosity.
The
next day, I saw a group of elders of Umuofia came to Okonkwo’s house early in
the morning. Nwoye and I were being sent out before they are having their
conversation. They indeed were hiding something from me. Although I tried hard to listen, I heard
nothing as they spoke in low tones. I was puzzled as to why they act secretly.
Later
in the day, Okonkwo told me that I was to be taken home the next day. At first,
I was shocked but somehow I did not feel happy with that good news. In fact, I
was at a loss. My home had gradually become very faint and distant. I still missed my mother and sister and I
would be very glad to see them, but somehow I knew I was not going to see them.
I still remembered once when men had talked on low tones with my father, things
changed. However, it seemed like it would be happen all over again.
